The opening of the UK's
first family plannig clinic by Dr.Marie Stopes in 1921 created one
of the greatest impacts of the 20th century. It marked the start
of a new area,in which couples,for the first time,could reliably
take control of their fertility. |

Users of the contraception found they were freed from
the perpetual threat of pregnancy,ill health and death
in childbirth.Sex no
longer had to be procreational or
dangerous.But the clinic
was just one of the element
in Marie Stopes'sexual
revolution. |

Whilst it increased access to family planning for many couples,the
clinic also carried out ground-breaking
research into
contraceptive efficacy and compliance,
and brought the issue of
sex into the public area. |

When she wrote his first
book,Married Love, she claimed it was to save other
women from the sexual humiliation she
had suffered.In 1923 she
wrote the book Contraception. |

Dr.Marie Stopes opened
the first British birth control centre,offering a free service to
married woman and gathering scientific data about contraception. |
